Career Event - Primary 6 & 7 Students - Coatbridge

22 May 2024

STEM Activity with 150 students from North Lanarkshire, in collaboration with SmartSTEM's & New College Lanarkshire Coatbridge

On Wednesday 22nd May 2024, Amey’s M8 Team for Scottish Road Partnership (SRP), Adam Brown (Bridges Engineer Manager) and Martin Cochrane (Liaison & Comms Officer) based at Amey’s Office, Glasgow, used their Social Impact Day to attend and man a stall at a Careers Fair at New College Lanarkshire, Coatbridge. This was in collaboration with SmartSTEM’s, a private business promoting Science, Technology, Engineering & Math's in schools across the west of Scotland.

The Amey staff engaged with 150 North Lanarkshire Primary School students (year P6 & P7) throughout the day, talking about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math's (STEM). Many of the students got the opportunity to use two of Amey’s VR Headsets, to experience in ‘virtual reality’ what an engineer’s workday is like as they walk the high wire cables at the top of the Forth Road Bridge during the necessary regular inspections of the historic structure. The students also had the opportunity to speak to the Amey Engineer about their career paths, look at a variety of further education courses available in the Amey workplace and given advice on subjects to consider studying at high school for a future career in civil engineering.

In addition, some students were shown BIM (Building Information Modelling) used locally to assist building the A725 Raith Underpass (at M74 Junction 5). This is a three-dimensional computer modelling tool used by engineers around the world to improve overall project outcomes prior to construction.
