On Monday 31st March 2025, Scottish Roads Partnership’s (SRP) Graham Drummond returned to St Patrick’s Primary School for a third time, with a new gritter, which had been named by one of their pupils, Finlay aged 7 years. Finlay had won the ‘Gritter Naming’ Competition in January  with his brilliant name of choice ‘SIR CHILLY CONNOLLY’, named after Scotland’s world famous comedian, actor & musician, Sir Billy Connolly. The gritter was on display for the whole school to view and Finlay received a £50 toy store voucher for his fabulous idea.

The new gritter, operated by SRP and their contractor Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will patrol the adjacent M8 M73, M74 Project trunk roads for the next 8 years. These routes are located in and around the East side of Glasgow and hopefully ‘The Big Yin’s’ name in bold livery on our gritter will provide a sense of fun during adverse weather events and be enjoyed by the communities around the Greater Glasgow area.

SRP had given a PowerPoint presentation to the whole school on Winter Weather in Scotland & Gritting on the Trunk Roads, with a competition attached for the entire school to participate in. Prior to this, the students in P7 had visited the Traffic Scotland Gritter tracker website with their teacher as part of a lesson on Winter weather.

Staff at SRP and Amey are grateful for access to the school students and teachers and wish to thank them all for their fantastic efforts in naming their new gritter for the coming years ahead.
