Scottish Roads Partnership Highways Operatives tidy up outdoor area at Calderside Nursery Centre in Blantyre

In Mid-May 2024, Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP) and their contractor Amey, who operate and maintain the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project in the central belt of Scotland, were contacted by Calderside Nursery Centre, Blantyre Head of Establishment Donna Tyczynski asking if they could help cut the grass of the children’s outdoor play park, dismantle three wooden sheds for use elsewhere in the community and clear some debris away.

Donna explained that the nursery is open every day of the year, from 8am – 6pm and supports approximately 190 local children and families aged from birth to 5 years old. It has 36 staff but due to shift work and caring for the children this limits staff’s time for looking after and caring for their large outdoor space. The large grass outdoor area of the nursery is generally maintained by the council however due to recent regular vandalism and severe fire damage to the area, it needed a total refresh and to be cared for (a general all-round tidy up), local grants and funding were not available to apply for at the time of the incidents, this then leaving the space unavailable to use, restricting the children’s daily access to outdoor play at the centre.

On Friday 07th June, ten Highways Operatives from SRP’s contractor Amey utilised their social impact day, to assist with grass cutting & strimming duties at the nursery, including a general tidy-up of the outdoor grassland, removing debris, disused planters and old tyres. The Amey Operatives carefully dismantled three wooden sheds so they could be donated to others in the local community, which in turn increased the play space for children attending the learning centre.
